A Gardener’s Garden in Cumberland. A 2019 installation at a new home build, with a truly stunning view of the misty Beaufort foothills. Focal groupings of selected trees are key to establishing this new home in the landscape and framing the expansive view of the mountains beyond. Strategic screening from neighbours is achieved with lush canopy trees and dense understory plantings.
The back yard is an oasis with a stream and pond, brimming with dragonflies, birds, and bees. Willows, irises, and sumacs bring soft colour and texture to a naturalistic feature. Clean crisp lines of narrow grey pavers are softened by frothy tufts of drought tolerant creeping thyme, and mounding ornamental grasses.
The roadside bed along the driveway features something more unique than the typical suburban front yard; a rainwater collection swale and rain garden. Rainfall is collected from neighbours higher property and channeled to slowly sink and regenerate ground water. The native species used in this area welcome the supplemental water.
This is a thoughtful, resilient and ecologically responsible landscape, restorative for not only the wildlife in the area, but for the gardener as well. A lush, green haven in the midst of a suburban desert.
